20170817 God’s Gift of Music

Psalm 150:5-6 (NRSV) ”Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!”

DCC’s clanging cymbals took on many, many forms last Tuesday night.  Melodic violins, rhythmic drum kits, harmonious guitars, triumphant trumpets, angelic voices, heavenly bells, inspirational composition, a fascinating repertoire – these were some of our “clanging cymbals”.

Karralyka Centre’s main auditorium was packed – there wasn’t a seat spare. The number of performers on the night exceeded 400. The range of groups and the diversity of the pieces they performed reflected a school music program in outstanding shape. Our incredibly able crew of music teachers, ensemble directors and support staff effectively ‘choreographed’ an outstanding event that will stay in our collective memory for some time.

For me, the narrative that threaded its way through the night was very special. It was subtle and deliberate. It was countercultural at times, and honouring of others at all times. It modelled respect and humility in so many different ways. This was the narrative I witnessed. The students of our College are comfortable sharing their gifts with one another, and an audience when appropriate. Younger members and older members of the student body combine happily together to produce excellence within groups. Older members are generous in sharing their knowledge and gentle in their care of the younger members. Younger students were respectful and happy to be led, engaging in a learning process where the older students were their mentors and teachers. There was a freedom of expression under God, seen through many acts of worship on the night, that reminded us of God’s blessing on us. And the level of parental support for their children was significantly high, acted out through commitment, presence, and celebration.

If you were there, thank you for joining us. If you’ve taken a participant to music lessons for one or many years, thank you. If you assisted in the preparation, set up or pack up, thank you. If you were a performer, thank you for your part in a wonderful night.

I am extremely thankful to God for the talent he has bestowed on our community – staff and students sharing their giftedness so willingly, selflessly and with an attitude of giving glory to God through their performances. May this continue to be the mindset and enterprise that our College is known for.
